성탄절의 주인공은

많은 사람들은  성탄절하면 성탄트리와 선물을 생각합니다.
어릴 적에  성탄절 날 교회가면 예쁜 성탄트리 장식과 선물을 받았습니다. 주변에 예수님을 믿지 않던 친구들도  이날은 교회를 나왔습니다. 아이들은 선물을 받는 기쁨과 재미가 가득했었습니다. 그래서 그런지 성탄절이 가까워지면 왠지 마음이 설레 임이었습니다. 일 년의 마지막인 12월이라는 것 때문은 아닙니다. 아이들에게는  성탄절에 받게 될  선물에  더 관심이 많기 때문에  마음이 부풀었던 것입니다. 길거리에는 크리스마스 케롤 송이  이곳저곳에 넘쳤습니다.  그 속에 대표적으로 등장한 이름이 산타클로스 할아버지 입니다.  산타는  착한 아이에게나 착한 아이가 아닌 아이까지  선물을 주는 마음씨 좋은 천사 같은 존재로 마음속에 그려져 있습니다. 어릴 적엔  산타클로스 할아버지가 실제로 존재하고 있다고 믿습니다.  성인이 되어서 산타클로스 할아버지가 간밤에 선물을  주고 가지 않았다는 것을  알게 되지만, 소문을 내면서  굳이 없다며 속았다고   확인하려는 사람은 지금까지 아무도 없습니다.    선물을 나눠주는 고마운 산타 할아버지로서  마음속에  평생 믿고 싶어 하는 것일 것입니다.
정작 요즘 성탄절하면 많은 사람들이 예수님이 핵심인데  예수님은 없고 마음속에는  선물과 산타와 상술만 자리 잡고 있다는 것은 부인할 수 없습니다. 어쩌다   산타 할아버지가  성탄절의 주인공처럼  장식되어  있을까를 생각해볼 필요가 있습니다.

사실  성탄절에 산타클로스(Santa Claus) 할아버지가 나타나 아이들에게 선물을 주는 풍습은 미국에서 온 것입니다.  동화 속에  산타클로스 할아버지는 크리스마스 전날 밤에 굴뚝으로 들어와서 착한 아이들의 양말 속에 선물을 넣고 간다고 그려놓았습니다. 하늘을 나는 썰매를 타고 와서  많은 선물을  주고 간다고 전해집니다. 이런 산타 할아버지에 대한 생각에  클레멘트 무어(Clement C. Moore, 1779-1863)라는 시인이  1823년  출판한 “성 니콜라스의 방문”(A Visit from St. Nicholas)이라는 시를 썼던 것이 시작점이었습니다. 무어는  시에다   할아버지가 루돌프 사슴과 썰매 타고 그리고  굴뚝을 통해 집안으로 들어와  선물을 가득  담은 자루를 들고 와서  살짝 나눠주고 간다는 내용입니다. 얼마가 지난 후에 토마스 네스트(Thomas Nast)라는 화가가  그 시에 삽화 그림을 그려 넣었던 것인데  지금의 산타클로스 할아버지에 대한  모습을  만들었던 것입니다. 무어의 시에는 산타할아버지가 추운 북극에 산다는 것을  말하고 있습니다.
본래 산타 할아버지의 모습은 푸른색 두루마기를 입은 모습이었습니다.
늘날 산타클로스 할아버지는 빨간 옷을 입고 있는데 이것은 1931년 코카콜라 회사가 광고를 위해서   산타클로스 할아버지의 그림을  푸른색에서 바꿨기  때문입니다.
 사실 산타클로스 할아버지는 실존인물이었습니다. 3-4세기 경 '산타 니콜라스'(Santa Nicholas)라는 사람이 지금의 터키 미라(Myra) 지역에 살았는데  그는

어느 날 가난한 집안의 세 딸이 빚을 갚지 못해 노예로 팔려가게 되었을 때 산타 니콜라스는 밤에 몰래 그 집에 금덩어리를 넣어 주어 빚을 갚게 해주었습니다. 사람들은 니콜라스 할아버지를 존경했기에  '성'(Santa), 곧 '거룩한'이라는 글자를 붙여 '산타(聖) 니콜라스'라고 부르게 되었습니다. 로마교회는 전통적으로 12월 5일을 성 니콜라스의 날로 정해  기념해오던 것을  네덜란드와 벨기에 그리고 루마니아와 체코 지방에서 12월 5일을 축제로 지키고 있었습니다.이날은 어린이뿐만 아니라 어른들도 좋아했습니다. 착한 아이에게는 성 니콜라스가 와서 선물을 주고 나쁜 아이들에게는 매를 준다는 이야기가 있지만  이날만큼은 나쁜 아이가 없습니다. 모든 아이들이 선물을 받기 때문입니다.
그러나  12월 5일에 있는 이 행사는 12월 25일의  성탄절과는 전혀 별개의 날입니다.

'크리스마스'(Christmas)에 산타 할아버지가  본격적으로 등장하기 시작한 곳은 미국 뉴욕이라고 말합니다. 처음에  네덜란드  이민자들이  뉴욕에 정착해 살면서 12월 5일에 '산타 니콜라스의 날'을 축제로 지켜왔던 것입니다.  당시에는  '뉴 욕'(New York)은 '뉴 암스테르담'(New Amsterdam)이라고 불렀습니다.  네덜란드가 영국과의 식민 전쟁에서 패하면서 이름이 바뀌었던 것입니다. 하지만  뉴욕에 살고 있던 네덜란드 사람들의 축제는 계속되면서  나중에 12월 25일 크리스마스 축제와 합쳐지게 됩니다. 그래서 '크리스마스'가 남고 '산타 니콜라스의 날'은 사라졌지만  '산타 니콜라스의 날'의 축제 문화는 크리스마스 안에 남아 있게 되었던 것입니다. 원래 성탄절의 의미와는 전혀 관계가 없는 것이  섞여 들어간 것입니다.
성탄절의 주인공은 예수 그리스도 이십니다.

Star of Christmas

Many thinks of Christmas trees and presents when cued with Christmas. When one is young, they received pretty Christmas ornaments and presents at church. Young are filled with the happiness and fun in receiving presents. Perhaps that is the reason we are filled with flutters as days draw closer to Christmas. It is not simply because it is the end of a year for children as they are more interested in receiving presents. Christmas carols with Santa Claus's name filled the streets. Santa is depicted like an angel that gives presents to both the nice and naughty children. Youth actually believe that Santa exists only to realize that Santa Claus did not leave any presents at night as they age. Even so, they do not purposely check the truth of being deceived with others. Rather, they wish they can believe in Santa for rest of their life.

We cannot deny the fact that Lord Jesus is nowhere in their hearts, but full of Santa, presents, and business tactics. We need to take a moment to realize why Santa became the star of Christmas.

The tradition of Santa Claus giving presents to children on Christmas came from United States. Santa Claus from the tales traveled on a flying sleigh and climbed down the chimney a night before the Christmas and left presents to nice children inside the socks. Such a beginning to this fairy tale was written by a poem called A Visit from St. Nicholas by a poet Clement C. Moore (1779-1863). In the poem, Moore pictures a grandfather riding a sleigh with reindeer and giving presents from a huge sack, after gaining access to the houses through the chimney. Not long afterwards, an artist Thomas Nast drew a covering illustration for the poem that shows Santa Claus's type we see today. In the Moore's poem, elderly Santa lived in the cold North Pole and wore a thick blue coat. Nowadays, Santa wears a red cloak because Coca Cola company changed Santa's cloak color for their advertisement.

Matter of fact is Santa Claus was created based on real individual called Santa Nicholas, who lived at Myra region in Turkey. Santa Nicholas secretly put a gold nugget in a house that family could not pay off the debt to the point three of their daughters were going to become slaves. Because people respected this Nicolas grandfather, they started to add 'Santa', which meant 'Holy', to his name. Roman Catholics designated and celebrates traditionally on December 5^th as Saint Nicholas Day. Both the youth and old alike from Netherlands, Belgium, Romania, and Czech Republic regions to this day celebrate with festival on December 5^th. Even though the stories of good children receiving presents and naughty children a chastise from Saint Nicholas, there was no such naughty children on that day because every children receive gifts. This December 5^th and December 25^th have no relations, however.

It was in New York that Santa Claus started to appear in Christmas. Immigrants from Netherlands celebrated December 5^th as day of Santa Nicholas in the beginning. At that time, New York was also called New Amsterdam, as Netherlands name changed after losing a war with England over slavery. Even so, festivals continued for Netherlands immigrants in New York that later combined with Christmas festival on December 25^th. Hence, 'Christmas' remained and 'Santa Nicholas's Day' ceased, the festival culture of Santa Nicholas dissolved into Christmas. These have nothing to do with Christmas.

Star of Christmas is Lord Jesus Christ alone.
