모든 것을 잃게 하는 우상숭배Idolatry makes you lose all things

 
사람들이 갖는 삶의 자세는  각양각색입니다.
성품과 인격에 따라 서로 다를 수도 있습니다.
그러나 아무리 좋은 성품과 인격을 지녔어도  피해야 할 것이  있습니다. 다름 아닌  우상을 숭배하는  일입니다.
우상숭배는 본질을 본질 자체로 보는 것이 아니라 본질에서 벗어나  사랑하는데서 시작하게 됩니다.
커다란 고목나무를 그대로  인정하고 보는 것이 아니라  그 자체를  떠나 그 고목나무를 숭배하는 것과 같은 것입니다.

얼마 전에는  국내  유명한 항공회사에서  스스로 이륙하고 착륙하고 비행할 수 있는  자동항법장치를  부착한  최첨단 여객기를 앞에 놓고  돼지 머리와 배와 사과 그리고 막걸리를 차려놓고  그 회사 사장단이 나와  "잘 날게  해달라."라고  절을 하고  무당이 칼춤을 추는 모습을 보며  여러 생각이 들었습니다.

몇 년 전에는 인도에 17세의 소년이 40일 째 의자에 앉아서 금식을 했습니다.
그때부터 그 마을 사람들은 그 소년을  '신'이라고 부르면서 마을  모든 사람들이 나와서
하루 세 차례씩 자기들의 소원을 이루어달라며 경배하기 시작했습니다.
그 소년은 사람들의 의해서 "신"이 되어  학교도 결혼도 못하게 되었습니다.

조금 대단해 보이거나  월등하다고 생각되면 그 대상을  우상시하면서 그 우상을 자기들의  목적을 채워주는 도구로 여기면서  경배라는 인간행위를  전시합니다. 우상이 생각보다 훨씬 대단하면  그 우상을  심각할 정도로 두려워하면서  "저주가 임하지 않도록 노여워하지 말아 달라"며 우상에게  이것저것을 갖다 바치면서  경배를 합니다.
물론 인간의 연약함이 빚어낸 결과물이겠지만 참으로 한심한 모습들입니다.
그렇다고 21세기 과학문명이 발달한 이 시간에도  이런 어리석은 일들은 계속되고 있습니다.
소나 코끼리를 우상으로 여기는 나라들도 있습니다.
옛날 태국에서는  흰 코끼리를  신성한 동물로 취급 했습니다 .그래서 왕은 자기  맘에 든 신하들에게 이 흰 코끼리를 하사하곤 했습니다. 그런데 왕에게 받는 신하들이 대부분 집안이 기울었고 건강이 악화되어  병을 얻어 일찍 죽었습니다.
왕이 직접 준  신성한 우상인  하얀 코끼리를  위해서  커다란 정원을 만들고  코끼리가 먹을  음식과 목욕과 같은 사소한  것 하나까지 자신이 직접 다루어야 했습니다. 혹시 하얀  코끼리가 병들어 죽기라도 하면 자신의 생명도 위험하기 때문에  몸과 마음은  병들어 갈 수밖에 없었습니다. 먼 훗날  자신이  준 하얀 코끼리 때문에 신하가 일찍 죽게 된다는 사실을 알고 왕은  그 때부터 맘에 들지 않는 신하들에게만 하얀 코끼리를 주었다고 전해지고 있습니다.
하얀 코끼리는 사람들의 마음을 빼앗고 귀중한 힘과 시간을 허비하고 마음과 몸을 피폐하게 만들었습니다.
이스라엘이 망하게 된 것은 국방력이 없어서가 아니라 우상숭배가 원인이었던 것처럼  오늘 예수님을  주님으로 모셨다고 하면서 여전히 현대적인 우상인 물질(돈)에  빠져 있다는 사실입니다.
주님은 우상을 멀리하라고 했습니다. 우상 숭배는 모든 것을 잃게 합니다.
Idolatry makes you lose all things

Humans' basic positions in life are as various as it can be for multiple reasons, such as characteristics and personalities. However, there is something even those with the greatest characteristics and personalities should avoid with vengeance, idolatry. Idolatry starts from loving beyond the essence, itself, for what it is. Instead of seeing and acknowledging an old oak tree for what it is, one worships and views it differently than the essence of tree itself.

A few days ago, famous Korean airline company held an event in which president of the company bowed in front of new airplane equipped with automatic pilot and navigational system, asking for the “safe flights” as a shaman performed a sword dance in front of pig's head, apple, pear, and rice wine. Such event makes one think of many things.

A few years ago, a 17 year-old boy fasted for 40 days while sitting on a chair. From that moment on, the villagers called the boy 'god' as they worshiped him and asked for their wishes three times a day. The boy, who became a 'god' for the village is no longer able to attend school, let along get married.

Humans exhibit actions of taking any subjects that seem superior or better as idols to worship and tool to fulfill one's desires and purpose. If the idol is greater than expected, humans become extremely afraid and offer many things through worship simply to hope that the idol 'would not become anger and impose curses' on the subjects. Even though these are the product of humans' weakness and flaws, nevertheless pitiful sight as even during the scientific 21th century, such idiotic things are taking place.

There are even countries that take cows and/or elephants as idols. Ancient Thailand used to take albino elephants as sacred animals. Hence, emperor would bestow the albino elephants to his favorite subjects. Unfortunately, almost all the subjects who received the elephants would die young with ruined family and health. Reasons were simple, the subjects had to make extremely huge garden for the sacred idol elephant bestowed by the king, while taking care of every details, from what it eats to bathing, by themselves. With continuous threat and fear that should the albino elephant die or become sick, their own lives are threatened, brought illness to both their body, mind, and heart. It was not until years later did the king realize the subjects die younger because of the albino elephants, did the king started to give the elephant to subjects that he did not favor. The albino elephants stole not only humans' heart, but their precious time, efforts, and power; making others impoverished in their heart and body.

Just as Israel, as nation, was not ruined because they lacked national defenses, but rather because of idolatry; it is only the hard fact that those who say they have Lord Jesus as their saviour, are deep into modernized idol (money). Lord Jesus told us to stay far from idols. Idolatry makes one lose everything.
